High Altitude Acclimatization: Built around an 8-day trek (7 nights on the mountain) using the "climb high, sleep low" strategy—such as ascending to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,948m)—to maximize summit success.
Scenic Western Approach: Starts at Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's quieter western side, traversing rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the Shira Plateau before merging with the main southern circuit.
Varied Terrain & Landmarks: Highlights include scrambling up the Barranco Wall, crossing Karanga Valley, resting at Barafu Base Camp, and taking in sweeping high-altitude views.
Dedicated Mountain Crew: A private, full support team (professional mountain guide, cook, and porters) stays with your group throughout the entire journey.
Full Mountain & Lodge Amenities: Includes pre- and post-trek hotel stays in Arusha, camping equipment (tents provided), and three hot meals daily on the mountain.
Summit Experience: A midnight push from Barafu Hut to reach Uhuru Peak (5,896m) at dawn before descending to Mweka Camp.
A private transfer collects you from the airport for the drive to your lodge in Arusha — no itinerary tonight, just a proper meal and sleep before the trek starts in earnest tomorrow. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Airport → Arusha Arrival transfer Dinner River Trees Inn or Under the Shade Safari Lodge
After breakfast, the drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate takes about ninety minutes, where the trek officially begins. The first day is a gentle introduction — roughly three to four hours through forest to Miti Mkubwa Camp. ROUTE Arusha → Londorossi Gate → Miti Mkubwa Camp MAIN EXPERIENCE First trekking day, through forest MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Miti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~3–4 hrs
The forest gives way to heather as the trail climbs toward the edge of the Shira Caldera — a longer day, five to six hours, ending at the scenic Shira One Camp. ROUTE Miti Mkubwa → Shira One Camp MAIN EXPERIENCE Forest to heather transition MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Shira One Camp (3,609m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~5–6 hrs
A gentler day crossing the Shira Plateau, with the option of a side trip to Shira Cathedral along the way. This is also the point where the Lemosho trail joins the Machame route, so the higher camps see more foot traffic from here on. ROUTE Shira One → Shira Two Camp MAIN EXPERIENCE Shira Plateau crossing MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Shira Two Camp (3,849m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~5–6 hrs
Lemosho approaches Lava Tower from quieter ground than the more heavily used Machame side, though the destination is the same — up to 4,630 meters before dropping back down to Barranco Camp for the night. Gaining that much elevation and then losing it again in a single day is deliberate: it gives your body a head start on the harder days still ahead. ROUTE Shira Two → Lava Tower → Barranco Hut MAIN EXPERIENCE Acclimatization ascent and descent MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Barranco Hut (3,948m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~5 hrs THE MATANGOS TOUCH Altitude sickness has nothing to do with fitness, which is exactly why a day like this exists. Sleeping lower than your highest point of the day gives your body room to catch up before it has to work harder.
The morning opens with a scramble up the Barranco Wall — more approachable than it looks from camp below — before the trail settles into the southern circuit toward Karanga Camp, a shorter day at three and a half hours. ROUTE Barranco → Karanga Valley MAIN EXPERIENCE Barranco Wall, southern circuit MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Karanga Valley Camp (3,963m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~3.5 hrs
A short day into Kilimanjaro's high desert, ending at Barafu Camp — a bare, functional camp built around one purpose: the summit push that starts that night. ROUTE Karanga Valley → Barafu Hut MAIN EXPERIENCE Ascent into high desert MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Barafu Hut (4,600m) ACTIVITY DURATION ~3.5 hrs
A midnight departure is timed to reach Uhuru Peak by dawn — roughly seven hours up, covering the final 1,300 meters of elevation in the dark. Every climber handles that stretch differently; the guide sets the pace around what you're actually managing on the night, not a fixed schedule. After time at the top, the descent continues the same day down to Mweka Camp, a long final push of around five hours and nearly 2,800 meters of descent. ROUTE Barafu Hut → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp MAIN EXPERIENCE Summit attempt and descent MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Mweka Camp (3,100m) A GUIDE'S PERSPECTIVE No route up this mountain comes with a guaranteed summit — fitness only gets you so far once altitude enters the picture, and it affects everyone differently on the night. Our guides won't push past what's safe, and won't hold you back from what you're capable of either. That call gets made together, in real time.
A short, easier walk down to Mweka Gate, arriving around midday, followed by the transfer back to your lodge in Arusha for dinner and a proper rest. ROUTE Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha MAIN EXPERIENCE Final descent MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Under the Shade Safari Lodge or Mtoni River Lodge ACTIVITY DURATION ~4 hrs descent
A relaxed morning at the lodge before the transfer to the airport for your departing flight. ROUTE Arusha → Kilimanjaro Airport MAIN EXPERIENCE Departure transfer MEALS Breakfast SUMMIT NIGHT — UHURU PEAK By the time you leave Barafu at midnight, you'll have spent six days getting ready for exactly this — the summit push happens in darkness and cold that the rest of the trek doesn't really prepare you for. The walking itself isn't technical. What makes it hard is altitude, and altitude doesn't negotiate with fitness levels or good intentions. Some climbers reach Uhuru Peak feeling strong; others make it through sheer stubbornness after a rough few hours. Both are normal. What Lemosho's extra days on the mountain can do is stack the odds in your favor before that night ever starts. WHERE YOU STAY
