Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Julius Nyerere International Airport → Dar es Salaam

Arrival into Dar es Salaam, with a transfer straight to your hotel for the evening before flying on to Ruaha the next morning. If your international flight lands early enough in the day, it's sometimes possible to connect straight onto the same-day domestic flight to Ruaha instead — worth asking about once your flight times are confirmed. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Julius Nyerere Airport → Dar es Salaam Arrival transfer Dinner Miramonti Hotel, Dar es Salaam

Day 2 - Dar es Salaam → Ruaha National Park

A short flight brings you into Ruaha, where your guide meets you for the drive into the park and the first game drive of the trip. Ruaha sits within a much larger ecosystem — over 45,000 square kilometers including the surrounding game and wildlife management areas — and that scale is exactly why it still feels so undisturbed. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Dar es Salaam → Ruaha National Park Flight and first game drive Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Ruaha River Lodge

Day 3 - Ruaha National Park

Ruaha's terrain sets it apart from the northern parks — rugged rocky outcrops that hold a healthy leopard population, alongside greater and lesser kudu, striped and spotted hyena, and roan and sable antelope that don't turn up on a typical northern circuit. Elephant herds are often seen close to the lodge itself. The park's birdlife is substantial too, with pelicans, herons, and egrets among the regulars around its water sources. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Ruaha National Park Full or half-day game drive (guide's call) Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Ruaha River Lodge FROM THE BUSH Ruaha's lion population has grown large enough that they've been known to take on prey as big as giraffe — not their usual fare elsewhere in Tanzania. It says something about how little pressure this park sees.

Day 4 - Ruaha National Park

A second full day in Ruaha, with the drive shaped by what your guide is seeing rather than a fixed loop — whether that means more time along the river or further into the rockier ground. ROUTE Ruaha National Park MAIN EXPERIENCE Full day game drive MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Ruaha River Lodge

Day 5 - Ruaha → Iringa

A final game drive on the way out of Ruaha before the drive to Iringa, a highland town with a noticeably cooler climate than the parks below it — a natural place to break the journey south. ROUTE Ruaha → Iringa MAIN EXPERIENCE Final Ruaha game drive, then transfer MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Iringa Sunset Hotel

Day 6 - Iringa → Mikumi

A short town tour in Iringa before the roughly three-hour drive to Mikumi, positioned between Iringa and Selous to break up what would otherwise be a long single drive south. It's a deliberately easy day. ROUTE Iringa → Mikumi MAIN EXPERIENCE Town tour, then transfer MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner OVERNIGHT Camp Atuppele, Mikumi DRIVING TIME ~3 hrs to Mikumi

Day 7 - Mikumi → Selous Game Reserve

The drive from Mikumi brings you into the Selous — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982 and one of the largest protected areas on the continent, spanning some 50,000 square kilometers of grassland and woodland along the Rufiji River. Over 440 recorded bird species live here alongside elephant, lion, and African wild dog. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Mikumi → Selous Game Reserve Arrival and first game drive Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Rufiji River Camp or Selous River Camp

Day 8 - Selous Game Reserve

Two days here are left open on purpose — game drives, a boat safari on the Rufiji River, or a walking safari, worked out with your guide depending on what you'd most like to do and what the days bring. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE Selous Game Reserve Game drive, boat safari, or walking safari (guide's discretion) MEALS OVERNIGHT Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Rufiji River Camp or Selous River Camp

Day 9 - Selous Game Reserve

A second day with the same flexibility — whichever mix of activities made the most sense the day before, adjusted for what's happening now. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE Selous Game Reserve Game drive, boat safari, or walking safari (guide's discretion) MEALS OVERNIGHT Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Rufiji River Camp or Selous River Camp

Day 10 - Selous → Dar es Salaam

The standard route back is by road, roughly six hours to Dar es Salaam for your onward flights. A direct flight from Selous to Dar is available instead at additional cost, if you'd rather save the time. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS DRIVING TIME Selous → Dar es Salaam Road transfer (or optional flight) Breakfast, Lunch ~6 hrs by road
