to grasslands, lakes and swamps. Water sources include the two main rivers; Munge River in the west and Lerai River in the east as well as the Ngotokitok spring that spills into a swamp. Huge herds of ungulates dominate the crater floor with Zebras, Wildebeests, Elands, Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelles being the species most commonly seen. But the crater is also home to the “big five” and Rhinos, Elephants, Lions and Buffalo are often spotted. Leopards are rarely seen as they prefer staying in the forests on the crater rim. The

                         Zebras and Baobabs

highly endangered Black Rhino can also be found in the crater and sightings are not rare!  Serval cats, Caracal, Spotted Hyenas and Jackals can also be seen. After lunch we proceed to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

half a million Thomson’s Gazelle, and a quarter of a million Zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The great quantity of Wildebeest and Zebra form the star cast of a unique spectacle – the annual Serengeti migration. Even when the migration is quiet the Serengeti has the most spectacular game viewing in Africa, with goldenmaned Lions, Leopards, herds of Buffalo, smaller groups of Elephant and Giraffe and thousands upon thousands of Elands, Topi, Kongoni, Impala and Grant’s Gazelle.

Some 300–400 Hadzabe still live as hunter-gatherers, much as they have for thousands or even tens of thousands of years; they are the last functioning hunter-gatherers in Africa. Visiting the Datoga tribe will complete your cultural experience at Lake Eyasi. The Datoga are skilled farmers and metal craftsman, often trading with the Hadzabe. You will visit their homes and village, and experience their culture first hand.  Afterwards, we’ll drive to Arusha, stopping for souvenirs if desired with packed lunch.
