Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha LEARNING FOCUS: Introduction to Tanzania, geography, and program overview The Matangos team meets the group on arrival, with the rest of the day left free to settle in before the itinerary properly begins the next morning. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha Arrival transfer Dinner Pazuri Inn or Arusha Planet Lodge

Day 2 - Heritage & Social Impact Arusha

LEARNING FOCUS: Natural history, heritage preservation, and social inclusion A half-day at the National Natural History Museum — housed in the Boma, a former German colonial military compound from the 1900s — includes a guided tour and lecture on Tanzania's natural heritage. A town walk follows, learning about the culture of the native people, with a stop at a disabled center to see how its members carry out their daily work — a concrete look at inclusion rather than an abstract lesson. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Arusha Museum lecture, town walk, disabled center visit Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Pazuri Inn or Arusha Planet Lodge

Day 3 - Arusha → Mto wa Mbu → Karatu LEARNING FOCUS: Tanzanian education, rift valley ecology, and rural community life

The drive to Mto wa Mbu includes a visit to the local school at Jangwani, where students get a real look at the Tanzanian syllabus and time to interact directly with their peers there — not a scripted stop, an actual exchange. After lunch in town, a walk along the Manyara highlands takes in views over Lake Manyara National Park, birdlife, and monkeys, with the guide explaining local life as the route passes banana plantations and the village itself. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Arusha → Mto wa Mbu → Karatu Jangwani school visit, Rift Valley walk Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Pamoja Lodge or Eileens Trees Inn

Day 4 - Ngorongoro Crater LEARNING FOCUS: Geological formation, conservation, and traditional ecological knowledge

An early departure with a breakfast box gets the group into the crater for morning game viewing — famous for its concentration of the big five — before lunch at the rim. The afternoon is different from a typical safari day: a one-to-two-hour walking tour on the Ngorongoro highlands with armed rangers, covering conservation, Maasai pastoralist life, medicinal plants, and how to read animal tracks. It's a level of hands-on ecological learning a vehicle alone can't offer. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Ngorongoro Crater → highlands walking tour Crater safari, ranger-led walk Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Pamoja Lodge or Eileens Trees Inn FROM THE BUSH The ranger-led walk covers ground a game drive never touches — tracking, traditional medicine, plant identification. It's usually the day students talk about most once they're home.

Day 5 - Karatu → Olduvai Gorge → Central Serengeti LEARNING FOCUS: Human evolution, archaeology, and Earth science

The drive out of Karatu runs through the Ngorongoro highlands with game viewing along the way, arriving at Olduvai Gorge for three to four hours — one of the most important sites in the world for understanding human origins, with time for lunch and a proper exploration of the gorge and its excavation history. A stop at the nearby singing sand dunes adds an unexpected bit of geology before the group continues into central Serengeti, arriving in the early evening. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Karatu → Olduvai Gorge → Central Serengeti Olduvai Gorge, singing sand dunes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Moyo Tented Camp or Hippo Trails Camp

Day 6 - Central Serengeti National Park LEARNING FOCUS: Predator-prey dynamics and plains ecology

The group settles into the Serengeti properly today rather than just passing through — a full day of game drives, with lunch packed and eaten wherever the morning happens to take you. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Central Serengeti National Park Full-day game drive Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Moyo Tented Camp or Hippo Trails Camp

Day 7 - Central Serengeti National Park LEARNING FOCUS: The Great Migration and predator-prey relationships

Today's pace is left flexible rather than fixed in advance — an early or split rhythm depending on what the group would rather do. If the season lines up, there's a chance to watch the migration itself before heading back to camp for dinner. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Central Serengeti National Park Game drives, migration viewing (seasonal) Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Moyo Tented Camp or Hippo Trails Camp

Day 8 - Serengeti → Maasai boma → Karatu LEARNING FOCUS: Traditional pastoralist culture and Maasai heritage

The last game drive of the safari leg happens this morning, with a packed lunch at Naabi Hill Gate. The afternoon shifts gears entirely with a visit to a Maasai community, roughly an hour spent hearing directly from the people who actually live here, before heading back toward Karatu as the day winds down. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Serengeti → Maasai boma → Karatu Maasai cultural visit Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Pamoja Lodge or Eileens Trees Inn

Day 9 - Lake Eyasi → Tarangire LEARNING FOCUS: Indigenous hunter-gatherer and pastoralist cultures

An early start (bags left at the lodge) for the drive to Lake Eyasi to spend time with the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, and the Datoga, known for traditional blacksmithing — two genuinely different ways of life, both still actively practiced. After a hot lunch back at the lodge, the group continues to Tarangire for the evening. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Lake Eyasi → Tarangire Hadzabe and Datoga cultural visits Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Osupuko Tented Lodge or Tarangire Hide Away

Day 10 - Tarangire National Park LEARNING FOCUS: Wildlife ecosystems and elephant behavior

A full day in Tarangire, with an early game drive and breakfast box before a late lunch back at the lodge — lodges here sit within the park itself, so wildlife is often visible without going anywhere. Tarangire's elephant herds are some of the largest in the country, drawn by the river that shapes the whole park. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS OVERNIGHT Tarangire National Park Full-day game drive Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Osupuko Tented Lodge or Tarangire Hide Away

Day 11 - Tarangire → Arusha → Kilimanjaro Airport LEARNING FOCUS: Reflection and closing

The drive back to Arusha includes a stop at the Arusha Gallery for lunch and last-minute shopping before continuing on to Kilimanjaro Airport for departure — a relaxed close to eleven full days. ROUTE MAIN EXPERIENCE MEALS Tarangire → Arusha → Kilimanjaro Airport Gallery stop, departure transfer Breakfast, Lunch
