An early departure with a breakfast box gets the group into the crater for morning game viewing — famous for its concentration of the big five — before lunch at the rim. The drive out of Karatu runs through the Ngorongoro highlands with game viewing along the way, arriving at Olduvai Gorge for three to four hours — one of the most important sites in the world for understanding human origins, with time for lunch and a proper exploration of the gorge and its excavation history. A stop at the nearby singing sand dunes adds an unexpected bit of geology before the group continues into central Serengeti, arriving in the early evening.
