Tarangire is the first stop, and it's a fitting one to open with: a park built around a single river that pulls resident wildlife toward it for most of the year. Elephant, giraffe, impala, warthog, zebra, wildebeest, and dwarf mongoose are all commonly seen here, and lion and leopard turn up regularly too — on rarer days, even wild dog. The park also holds close to 550 recorded bird species, along with greater and lesser kudu and oryx further off the main tracks. There's a reason a full day is set aside for the crater and nothing else — its enclosed geography means the wildlife rarely leaves, so the viewing here is some of the most concentrated and reliable anywhere on the continent. Rhino, elephant, lion, and buffalo are all realistic sightings on a single day, alongside the zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle herds that fill the crater floor. The road to the Serengeti runs through the Ngorongoro Highlands and down onto the Ndutu plains, with a stop along the way at a Maasai boma for a genuine cultural exchange — a chance to hear directly from the community about how life is lived here. If your travel dates happen to fall during calving season, this stretch of plains is one of the areas where wildebeest gather in large numbers, though as with any wildlife movement, timing is never guaranteed.
